I turned 27 three days ago. Usually Socrates reminds me - I get distracted and I don't realize my birthday is passing. This year it was cars and curses. I've been repairing the body and engine of an off-roading vehicle, and the smell of the blood in the backseat the work has been engrossing. He gave me a pair of seashell earrings last year, ones he found and harvested himself. They were pale and made of the Glory of the Sea.

The odd thing is that I'm fairly sure I've turned 27 here before, but that was years ago. So am I in my thirties, now? I suppose it doesn't matter. I'll calculate the numbers. I'm 27.

There's a cake. I think it's chocolate.

I'd wanted to go off on a tangent about Englishmen — it was originally said about them, you know, which perhaps says a lot about their approach to food, but I can't say I want to think too much about the topic now. [A beat.] No. And if he made a habit of going after hearts in the literal sense, it doesn't sound as if I missed anything I'd have cared for.

Because it's enjoyable, I assume, and considered wholly perverse. Is there anything more satisfying than knowing innumerable amounts of people would frown upon your actions? Perhaps everyone wishes to become goblin men and goblin women — it sounds far more fun than being respectable, doesn't it?

That said, I don't know. Most people here are from a different time. It's almost funny how some things stay the same.

Appearances and expectations. The body and soul should be separate — what business does the soul have in deriving pleasure from the body? I've never cared much for my soul, though, so in my case, I doubt it makes a difference.
